We collaborated with the legendary artist- Himmat Shah for his book "Under the Mask." The book is a visual representation of his drawings that he produced during the coronavirus pandemic in the last couple of years. Given that the work was produced during a pandemic, it was a bit of a challenge for us to meet his expectations and do justice to this book. However, we had a great experience conceptualizing and designing this book.
At the time we first saw his drawings, we were in awe and wonder to see his artwork that resonates multitude of emotions/feelings/experiences of our world in a pandemic. On the very same day when we saw the drawings, we decided on the title of the book 'Under the Mask.' This book has been designed in an eclectic, artistic manner to align with the theme. The slipcover will provide an outline of the book title and artist's name, basically to represent how at one end our world was protected by the mask and on the other our dear ones were losing their lives amid pandemic. On three sides of the book, we have covered the book with blue color, which symbolizes hope and protection provided by the mask to the world. The hard cover has a visual display of the title along with a real mask in the center.
As one opens the book, the book encapsulates nearly 300 drawings, mostly in ink and pen on paper made by the artist. Overall, our idea to design this book was not only to make it aesthetically unique and appealing but also to align with the artist's work and make this book into a living experience of hope and resilience.
